Areas of interest

My main interest is on host-parasite interaction focusing on host genetics, parasite genetics, host-parasite communication, transmission dynamics and a bit on diagnostics. My primary focus is the roundworm (Ascaris suum) and whipworm (Trichuris suis) infecting the pig. Beside the veterinary perspective the pig is a very good model for the two corresponding parasites infecting humans, namely A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura infecting abourt 800 and 600 millions people, respectively. Below are listed my main research areas of interest which for all includes ongoing projects:

· The role of extracellular vesicles in host parasite communication

· The immune modulatory properties of parasitic worms

· Population genetics and the evolutionary relationship between helminth species

· Parasite identification and diagnostics using DNA based tools

· Molecular Bio-archaeology

Please feel free to contract me - maybe we could do some interesting research together :-)
